Teams gear up for annual Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic

By: Jonathan Bennett

The happy and fun-loving memories of Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich live on each year thanks to the annual Publix Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic. Mandich, his wife Bonnie and their three sons started the fishing competition prior to his death in 2011 as an attempt to raise money for various charities in the South Florida region.

The annual weekend-long fishing tournament is nearing – it's set to take place May 31 and June 1 at the Miami Beach Marina in Florida. This year's tournament continues with the fun atmosphere and will feature parties, live entertainment and of course, tons of fishing. The fete starts at 6 p.m. May 31 with a kick-off bash, registration and a chance for fishermen and women to meet with their captains.

Though the meet and greet is a great way to allow those in attendance to mingle, the following day is all about business. Crews will check in at 7 a.m. and head out to catch and release the biggest tuna, kingfish and wahoo before going back to the dock for a party, weigh-in and awards ceremony.

This year's custom crystal awards were donated by and will be presented to the Top 3 Boats, Top Angler, Top Lady Angler and Top Junior Angler, among others.
