Rihanna, Drake lead VMA nominations

With the 2012 London Olympics underway, it may be hard to focus on anything else. However, fans of music may be excited to know the nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were just announced. MTV News reports on-and-off couple Drake and Rihanna will be seeing a lot of each other on the night of the event as the two performers are each up for five awards.

Rihanna is up twice in the night’s biggest recognition awards category, Video of the Year. Her hits “We Found Love” and her duet with Drake, “Take Care,” are both up for the award. Rihanna is also up for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.  Drake is nominated in the Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Male Video, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects categories.

In the Video of the Year category, Drake and Rihanna will be up against Katy Perry for her song “Wide Awake,” Gotye for “Somebody That I Used to Know and M.I.A. for “Bad Girls.” The Best New Artist Category will be tough this year as many popular acts are up for this award, ranging from boy bands to R&B crooners. Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen, Frank Ocean, One Direction and The Wanted will all be vying for the top honors.

Fans can tune into to MTV on September 6 at 8 p.m. to see if their favorite stars have a chance at winning the famous golden popcorn.
