The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company recently awarded Mike Schiotis with the North American Highway Hero Award.
Schiotis earned his award after his heroic actions this past November. The truck driver slowed down once he saw a woman walking slowly in front of a man. He thought they were injured and went to help, but the woman immediately started screaming that the man was trying to kill her. Schiotis got the woman in his truck, dispatched the police and a local truck drivers to keep the armed man away from the truck until police arrived – and he was successful.
“We are grateful to Mike Schiotis for his quick thinking and brave actions,” said Phillip Kane, vice president of Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. “He literally put himself ‘in the line of fire,’ and in all probability, prevented a tragedy from taking place. Mike’s decision to interject himself into this dangerous situation is a powerful example of the selflessness and professionalism exhibited by many of today’s professional truck drivers. Because of his action, a life was saved. For this, Mike Schiotis has earned the right to be called a hero.”
This marks the 29th year of these awards. Schiotis was competing with three other men for the honor.
