The 29th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards might not be taking place until March 1, 2014, but that doesn't mean members of the award show's committee aren't already gearing up for the event. Most recently it was announced the Spirit Awards will feature a new category aimed at honoring the best of the best in film editing.

According to Variety magazine, officials of the Awards confirmed this news and shared with fans that the recognition awards ceremony would again take place on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), per the event's 2-year-deal with the channel.

"IFC has been our longtime broadcast partner, and we're thrilled to be renewing with them for the next two years," said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent. "We're also very happy to be recognizing editors in the Spirit Awards this coming year. The critical importance of editing in the filmmaking process cannot be overstated, and it's something we look forward to celebrating at the Spirit Awards."

According to the Film Independent's official website, the Spirit Awards were created as a way to honor the best independent films, actors, producers and more on a grand stage. Winners are selected by Film Independent board members, past Spirit Award nominees and recipients and active members of the nonprofit group.
